Peruvannamuzhi Dam

Peruvannamuzhi Dam, located in the Kozhikode district of Kerala, India, is a popular tourist destination nestled amidst lush greenery and stunning landscapes. It is part of the Peruvannamuzhi irrigation project and spans across the Chaliyar River. With its scenic beauty and tranquil surroundings, the dam is an ideal spot for picnics, bird watching, and boat rides. Visitors can enjoy a serene boat journey through the reservoir's backwaters and explore the uninhabited islands within the reservoir, such as the 'Smaraka Thottam,' a living memorial honoring the region's freedom fighters. The Peruvannamuzhi Dam also encompasses a crocodile sanctuary and a bird sanctuary, providing a glimpse of the diverse local wildlife. The region around the dam is nurtured by the waters and has become a fertile site for various spice gardens and plantations. The lush landscape, coupled with the calm water, makes it a perfect retreat from the hustle of city life. Being a part of an irrigation project, the dam also holds importance in supporting the agricultural practices in the area.


In the future, Kerala State Electricity Board plans to generate a small amount of power using 6 MW turbines. Annual production is expected to be 24.7 MU.



Dam Bridge

At a distance of 57 Kms from Kozhikode Railway Station, Peruvannamuzhi Dam is a beautiful picnic spot with great natural beauty amidst hills. The reservoir meets the drinking water needs of Kozhikode, Quilandy and Vadakara.


Boating facilities are available at the reservoir of the dam with speedboats and rowboat. There is a small island in the reservoir of the dam with a bird sanctuary & crocodile farm. One can closely observe the giant crocodiles maintained by forest department here. There is a garden named 'Smaraka Thottam' created for the memory of the freedom fighters of the region.
